Research Proposal: Drug Traffic in U.S.A

Introduction

Drug production and trafficking in the United States, is a prevalent phenomenon since the early twentieth century. Drug trafficking is a crime in facilitating or promoting the consumption of illicit drugs and addictive substances that threaten the health public for profit, although this definition may vary with different criminal laws of each state. According to various American officials, the issues related to drug addiction and crime in the U.S. has been going to an enormous size. The economy of the United States is threatened by an illegal trade and “trafficking” of drugs that impose serious responsibilities on the government and the citizens (Lyman & Potter, 2004). Drug law enforcement agencies face an enormous challenge in protecting the country's borders. Some of the urgent concerns under this context include the impact of governmental regulations on exporting illegal drugs, contraband interception of drugs at the border of the United States, the fight against criminal organizations, individuals distributing drugs within the country and the impact on consumers to reduce demand for drugs.

Significance of Study

The problem of combating drug trafficking continues to become urgent for the U.S. it constitutes one of the most prioritized concern on the agenda of the government, owing to its negativities and threats that are plaguing the economy and the growth of the country. The illegal drug market in the United States is one of the most profitable in the world. As such, it attracts the most ruthless, sophisticated, and aggressive drug traffickers. It is thus, imperative to know what the government is doing to eradicate issue related to drug trafficking in the United States. Drug trafficking is undoubtedly one of the pressing issues that require concerted attention and measures to combat this global threat.

Scope and Nature of the Problem

Although it is a general agreement that drug trafficking practices must come to a permanent end; the measures currently in use for eradicating the issue is still controversial and deviant. Every year, almost 100,000 U.S. citizens are arrested for various charges in drug trafficking (U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, 2011). The offenders included not only domestic citizens but immigrants and minorities too. It is important to study the challenges of the activity along with focusing on its present and past states; in order to recommend the government and the citizens how to tackle with the issue.
