Personalised Learning

Introduction

Personalized Learning is an effective learning approach that inculcates the concept of Deep Learning. It is through personalized teaching and learning that young children can become more engaged in classroom, can become a more devoted partner in achieving victory and success. Personalized learning is not just transference of knowledge and skills but it is a move beyond classroom structure where practical aspects of the concepts are taken into account. It is because of this that a student gains more development than he would have experienced had he been taught using conventional methods of learning in his earlier year; which basically are the developmental years with most impact. Five elements have been used by the Department Education and Skills (DfSK) to summarize the concept of Personalized Learning, they being Learning Assessment, Effective teaching and learning, curriculum entitlement and choice, school organisation and beyond the classroom.

Discussion

Although little research has been done in the area, it has been found that personalized learning is characterized by the learning environment; where from students to educators, every individual is inclined towards influencing learning. Personalized Learning is characterised by high level involvement of school staff and learners and 'learning to learn' (Hargreaves, 2006, Personalising Learning 6: The Final Gateway: School Design and Organisation, pp. 6). It is more attainable and possible when the concepts are taught with the aim to deliver practical value.

Schools pertaining to early year education are seen as in the phase of implementation of Personalized Learning; an effective and better alternative to Individualised Learning, through Assessment of learning, and subsequently using Effective teaching and learning methodologies to ward off loopholes that may have become evident in the assessment (Sebba, 2007, An Investigation of Personalised Learning: Approaches used by Schools, pp. 4). Earlier we have seen that, other than assessment and effective learning, three other elements are infused in the concept of Personalized Learning. These elements of the concept come into play as auxiliary activities rather than central activities. Early years schools are seen as more inclined towards reorganising school staff around their students so that they can help students individually in learning and gaining practical exposure, since young children need individualized attention so as to ensure their learning effectiveness.

Personalized learning requires intense efforts and trainings on part of school. There are many dimensions that are needed to have continuous monitoring, lavish funding and extensive reorganisation of the system because it is conventional learning upside down. Personalized learning requires institutes to have clear vision so that they can design comprehensive approach considering that. This well-articulated vision and objectives is the key element through which further issues that are facing Personalized Learning and its implementation can be solved.

Issues

Research conducted upon the implementation of personalized Learning at early years foundation stage reported the most common and prevalent issue regarding Personalized Learning as the clarity of the objectives.

Objectives

Objectives and vision of the school is important for it acts as guidelines to a more integrated approach that fosters personalized ...
