Greetings James and Emma,

Re: Relationship Advice

I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to both of upon your engagement. I have been enrolled in a course on interpersonal communication and would be sharing some of the knowledge that I have been able to gain from it. I hope that this information would help you guys to build a stronger and long term relationship.

Interpersonal communication plays a vital part in the regular daily life of an individual. We live in a society where people are dependent on one another in order to get support and encouragement to fact life harsh realities. We depend on our friends, family and relatives to understand our problems and provide insight to solve them. It is the belief that friends and romantic partners have in us that allows us to overcome the self-defeating patterns. They help us to become and appreciate the kind of person we want to be.

The basic method that is used by humans to express themselves to others is communication. We interact with one another to develop a concept of self, create and maintain relationships, participate in daily life activities and think collectively to achieve happiness. Communication has the ability to make a break a business. Business around the world is in constant search for individuals who have the expertise as well as the ability to effectively communicate their ideas.

Similar to businesses, romantic relationships rely on effective communication between the partners by enabling them to understand each other and resolve issues in a harmonious way. There are a number of guiding principles that can help couples like you to build and sustain the happiness throughout the relationship.

Principles and Misconceptions

Principles

Interpersonal communication provides people with the tools that allow them to share feelings and transfer information. They rely on giving verbal and non-verbal cues to help people understand their situation. A large majority of people are not good communicators because they do not consider it a worthwhile investment. They are not able to put people at ease and lose their interest very fast. They end up saying the wrong stuff and do not consider the impact that their words can have on others. Orbe (2005) presented the following principles for interpersonal communication.

Once you have said something, you cannot take it back

We communicate in order to let others know of our needs and how we feel about a certain person or a situation. Our words have the potential to heal and hurt at the same time and we should be careful when communicating with others. We cannot take communication out from our daily life but we can become effective communicators by investing in ourselves. For example, you need to take care when expressing your concerns regarding the actions of your partner's close friend. It's not what you say, but how you say it that will determine the effectiveness of your communication.
