Expect the Unexpected

Introduction

Nowadays, every organization is going through unexpected or surprising circumstances with regularity. However, before this study little was known about how they get prepared and reacted in surprising situations. The purpose of Bechky and Okhuysen study was to determine how organization response to unexpected and change circumstances and how they prepare to relocate their work accordingly, and how organizations develop the collective resources required after encountering unexpected circumstances. The research questions are stated clearly with a clear background that signifies the research.

This study was conducted on swat officers and film crews to gauge how they handle unexpected circumstances. These two firms are interrelated in terms of surprises with regularity. The questions are interesting; however, many researchers have identified surprising situations as a crucial part of an organizational life. The research questions are stated appropriately and proved to be effective in gauging objectives of a research.

Furthermore, the study sounds significant because surprising and unexpected situation become a vital part of organizational life, explicitly nowadays. As well as, organizations are more concern about how deal with such situations, and to develop collective resources that required to deal with unexpected situations. Hence, the study contributes in addressing the current issue faced by organizations (Giadrosich, 1995, pp. 25-380).

On the other hand, this study also has some limitations such as investigating a research problem and determining stability or change within a sample (SWAT officers and film crews) is constrained because it cannot be generalized. The study only focuses on socio-cognitive resources to draw when encountering surprising circumstances. However, the data are gathered through semi-structured interviews thus, there is a probability that the findings of this study can be partially researcher bias.

Literature Review

Prior Researchers

Many researchers (Lampel & Shapira, 2001: 599-611; Weick, 1995; Weick & Sutcliffe, 2001) dedicate their attention to unexpected situations and demonstrated this surprising as a part of organizational life. The literature is logical, comprehensive and relevant to the research problem. Since, most part of the literature review of this study emphasize on organizational surprises; as (Cunha, Clegg, & Kamoche, 2006: 317-329) define such surprise is that situation which is not planned or expected, and include any unexpected situation that creates interruption in standard work progression. McDaniel, Jordan, & Fleeman (2003:266-278) & Weick & Sutcliffe (2001) described unexpected events faced by organizations demonstrate their capability to encountering uncertainty and explore potential of an organization for robust action. The literature review of this study also highlights sources and consequences of unexpected circumstances. Cunha et al., (2006: 317-329) asserted complexity of the system and lack of knowledge as a source of surprise. On the other hand, Weick (1993: 357-381) affirmed that outcomes can vary member to member in an organization that differs in the extent, while the mutual understanding of an event falls apart. A recent study investigate the consequences of unexpected situation as it does not have a direct effect on members of an organization, but posses an impact on their ...
