Conflict is something that may occur in your everyday life, however when it rears its head into the workplace it may leave an uncomfortable setting for you and everyone around you. Confronting that person that you may be in conflict with and holding them accountable for what they have done may be harder for some than you would think. Through my research I have found that there are ways to resolve a conflict whether it is in a workplace or in your personal life. According to the article Management; The Very Model of Conciliation by Mickey Meece, “What really threatened the agency's productivity and moral was an avalanche of complaints by angry, frustrated employees”.
The steps that are taken to resolve a conflict are crucial to the success of the resolution. I chose this skill because as an employee I have been involved in many conflicts leaving turmoil and chaos at the workplace and I want to learn how to calm my attitude towards conflict and better myself. As an employee at Starbucks I have found myself in conflict with many people due to the lack of commitment and gossip that surrounds the coffee shop. This one girl and I in particular have been involved in many conflict and by not knowing how to resolve the first conflict we have engaged in many others. Through my research I have learned many new ways on how to resolve conflict in my everyday life.
Research has allowed people to learn more about a subject that they may not have known about. When researching conflict management I have looked at many different sources that show how following certain steps help resolve the conflict allowing everyone to work in a cohesive manner. When I conducted my interview with Professor Cheves who has her degree in conflict management, she explained her experience within the field. Professor Cheves said that there are two main forms on mediation that will help resolve conflict, simple mediation and self-mediation. Cheves is often involved as the third party within an organization solving conflict in some of the most difficult situations. She explained that if a conflict is not resolved it could lead to potential lawsuit as in this one case she worked on where it dealt with accusation of discrimination. Some of the hardest cases she worked on have caused yelling, screaming, and crying when they found out what the consequences would b if the conflict was not resolved. By repeating the steps of the mediation process, Cheves hopes that the individuals will understand the severity of the situation. When articulating the professional outcome Cheves says “it is important to know that your actions may lead to dire consequences and a resolution is necessary for the company and yourself. Cheves said the hardest part of her job is watching two people get personal and try to destroy one another with personal attacks.
