Introduction

The Necklace is a small story by Guy de Maupassant, first published in 1884 in the French newspaper Le Gaulois. The story has become one of Maupassant's admired works and is well known for its twist ending (James, 245).

The Necklace

During the course of Guy de Maupassant's short story "The Necklace," the major feature, Matilda Loisel, makes several ironic discoveries. In supplement, there are other discoveries that the reader makes but Matilda does not. The breakthrough that types the story's climax anxieties the factual environment of the necklace she has scrounged from her ally Mrs. Forestier. But this is possibly not the most significant message of this story (James, 200).

As the story undoes, Matilda, a juvenile middle-class wife who aspires to attach the top ranks of mankind, is finally asked for to a high-society activity granted by her husband's employer. Hoping to influence her visitors and therefore "fit in", she borrows a good-looking valuable gem necklace from her ally Madame Forestier. Unfortunately, throughout the course of the night, the necklace is lost. Rather than battle her ally precisely with the story of her negligence, she and her married man scratch simultaneously every bit of money they can (Sullivan, 223). 

As de Maupassant explains that Loisel owned eighteen 1000 franks which his dad had left him. He scrounged the rest. He scrounged it, inquiring for 1000 francs of one, five century of another, five Louis of this one, and three louis of that one. He provided remarks, made ruinous pledges, and took money of usurers and the entire rush of lenders. He compromised his entire reality, in detail, endangered his signature without even understanding if he could make it good or not, and, harassed by disquiet for the future, by the very dark misery which enclosed him, and by the outlook of all personal privations ...
