In my opinion, they need to do two things; correct attitude and positive social life.

I think the main reason is the attitude, if you want to effort for your future; the first mission is a correct study attitude, because the correct attitude can leads to a good habits. That's very important to who want to be successful. I have a real story about my friend; he was a real underachieving boy, he wants to study but he was so lazy, at the beginning of every semester he said, “I will work hard in this semester! I want to be a good student!” But two or three weeks later, he will become to the old way. One thing changed him totally, that is about his F-1 visa. Because of his bad grads the U.S. Embassy didn't want to give him new visa. After that, He thought for a long time about what's happen with himself.
