CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview
This dissertation will attempt to understand what zoos are doing for the conservation of endangered felids. It will look at three main areas of study these are journals, zoo web pages And the International Species Information System or ISIS. The journal collection that will be looked at and studied is Zoo Biology. This section will observe what studies have been undertaken on felids in an ex -situ zoo environment. It will look at studies on behavior, Breeding, enrichment, husbandry and nutrition. The Zoo Biology journals will be taken from The very first editions in 1982 right up to present day journals. This will ensure a wider and more concise conclusion and study of the aforementioned areas. As mentioned earlier this Dissertation will also look at U.K. zoo web pages in order to establish what efforts and Lengths zoos are going to in relation to the conservation of endangered felids. This study will Also look at what species zoos are undertaking conservation on and also what type of Conservation is being undertaken either in-situ or ex-situ. This study will concentrate on ten U.K. zoos which will be listed in that study section.
The final study in this dissertation is the use of the ISIS database to answer several questions Such as what is the reproductive success of particular species? What species that are being Kept? And what are the numbers of species being kept? And also any odd trends that may occur for example why zoos have odd numbers of sexes e.g. 4 males and 1 female and also Why less threatened species are being kept more than critically endangered ones. There will Also be two tables included in this study these are a cat species table this will include Headings such as taxonomic names, IUCN red list conservation status, as well as Worldwide, European and U.K. ISIS database sex ratios. The other table will concentrate on the comparison between the keeping and breeding success of ten less vulnerable felid species and ten critically endangered species. The paper will also include tables, graphs and calculations.
As aforementioned there will be the inclusion of two tables. The calculation that shall be used in this paper is the Chi-Square test. This test will be used on the ISIS database and cat species table to determine sex ratios. The calculations will be shown in full and the results from the calculations will be shown in appropriate labeled graphs. There will also be a conjoined discussion and conclusion of findings.
