CRITICAL APPRAISAL

Critical Appraisal “The Stutterer's Reaction to the Telephone as a

Speaking Situation”

Abstract

In this study we try to evaluate the aspects that have been provided in The Stutterer's Reaction to the Telephone as a Speaking Situation. In this study, the contribution that the author had made, by presenting that study has been presented first. The second part is based on the review of the literature, in which the literature review, method, results and discussion of that study have been reviewed. The last part of this study focuses on the overall evaluation of that study, providing us with description about the positive, as well as, the negatives of that study. Suggestions, regarding what could have been done, in order to make this a better study have also been presented in the last part.

Contribution to the literature

The study has presented some useful aspects about the fear of speaking on telephone, in a Stutterer's. It also brought forward the fact that a Stutterer has more fear of making a call himself rather than receiving a call, though the fear for both is present. The study also pointed out the average age when a stutterer develops the fear for the telephonic conversation (Alm, Per, 2005). Due to the facts that the study brings forward, it becomes possible for others to assess this study, and analyze whether this fear is a common phenomenon among the stutterer's or not. It also becomes possible to analyze, when the stutterer's normally develop this kind of fear (Alm, Per, 2005). This will in turn also help in figuring out the time when it can be treated in the best possible manner, to get the best likely result. Through the successful application of the methods for treatment, there is necessary, but knowing when the best time is those to apply these treatments can also be of real help, in trying and eliminating the fear from the stutterer's. This will make the life of a person better, and will be a sizeable contribution (Alm, Per, 2005).

Literature Review

The most traditional treatments were aimed at achieving fluent speech of stuttering. The truth is that almost all stutterers can in some circumstances pronounce the word perfectly, and otherwise stutter (Alm, Per, 2005).

There are several methods for achieving fluent speech in the stutterer, to name some: Sing, whisper, syllabic, delayed auditory feedback, talk to white noise in the ears, the pronunciation synchronization with breathing, talking to a beat with a metronome, etc (Alm, Per, 2005). The problem is not getting the stutter say a word clearly. Keep in mind that stutterers have the paradox that we see so often psychologists: avoidance behaviors in which patients try to solve the problem become a fundamental part of the disorder. There are many treatment methods that are intended to establish fluent speech patterns through training and reinforcement of the correct pronunciation. Its fundamental weakness is that they do not address the postponement and avoidance behaviors (Craig, Tran, 2005).
