WORKING WITH A YOUNG PERSON

Working with a young person

Youth and Communiqué Studies

Background

For this paper the data obtained was gathered from a young individual who immigrated to the UK from Africa. I conducted six interviews with him in which he highlighted certain issues he experienced while he was in Africa. Through the course of my meetings with him we both discussed the progress that he has made and also discussed certain strategies which he might want to consider in order to effective deal with the issues the boy had experienced.

Outline of the issue

Racism

In the first session with the person that came from Africa, he talked about Racism and Poverty. He told me that racism and poverty has impacted his health and well-being.  He pointed out that in recent years, the trend has been for a larger proportion of immigrants to come from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America; not having the facility in English or French, immigrant immigrating to United Kingdom from these areas are consequently further stratified in the lower rungs of the labour market. According to him, immigrants face additional barriers to their labour-force participation in not having educational qualifications obtained in their countries of origin recognized in United Kingdom. Often, work experience acquired at a total cost in countries of origin is also disregarded by employers in United Kingdom. When immigrants work in low-paying, low-skilled, non- unionized jobs, their economic vulnerability reinforces dependence on other sponsors and impacts their health and well-being. He expressed that fear of losing a job or losing wages for a day to visit a physician leads these immigrants to cover up or ignore illness until it reaches a crisis point.

Strategy

In order to effectively deal with racism, the African boy can take part in group therapies that help in strengthening the boy and helping them realize that the solution of the problem lies in making the boy meet other immigrants and collectively dealing with the issue by understanding that the fault is not with them.

Growing divides between whites and blacks

In the second session, the African spoke to me about the growing divides between whites and black people in economics, social mobility, and political voice make the seemingly sempiternal nature of British racism and the material privileges of whiteness of importance to scholars of leadership and transformative political engagement. As the element of race has remained an obstacle to the at-large political participation of non-whites in the United Kingdom, for the African it seems only fitting that this handbook address that reality. He told me that the problem of race and the consequences of racism are what continue to impede the abilities of policy makers, political representatives, and government administrations to effective address the concerns of all of the Britain. This distinction is of the utmost importance in moving beyond the ethics of racial compassion to an actionable antiracist philosophy.

It has also become apparent from his thoughts that black immigrants face discrimination in all phases and places and are being ...
