Violence

Violence is a behavior intention that causes or may cause physical or psychological harm to other beings and is associated, though not necessarily with physical aggression. It can also be psychological or emotional, through threats or insults. Some forms of violence are sanctioned by law or by society and others are crimes (Pittaro, 2007).

Violence at school is one of the most visible forms of violence against children. However, the general perception of increased violence is not confirmed by statistics. Indeed, the anxiety of adults to violence in schools is partly prompted by the tabloid press, which restores the circumstantial evidence without a real analysis background. During the 2005-2006 academic year, the number of students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade is estimated to be around 55 million. The number of school-associated deaths during the 2005-2006 academic year was 17, which includes 14 homicides and 3 suicides. More prevalent forms of violence included simple assaults, thefts, vandalism, and bullying. In fact, at least 25% of students reported that they had been bullied at school during the previous 6 months. The consequences of this victimization cannot be underestimated (Pittaro, 2007).

The school cannot be isolated from the environment in which it is involved today a large segment of the population , beset by unemployment , the insecurity , poverty and homelessness, among other ailments, as well as by serious economic and social reasons. This in a complex and multi-causality, which states the interplay of three levels: the social or violence against the school, family and institutional school or school violence.

The deterioration process accentuated the differences between those schools are well equipped in resources human and material, and those who have very serious shortcomings. It is known that inequalities often lead to irreversible conflicts related to social inclusion and exclusion, a way of severe discrimination. Backup plans for schools with fewer resources and a gradual promotion of more demanding forms of education are a good starting point to begin to redress inequalities, discrimination and shortcomings that conspire against any attempt to reinstate the country on the path of progress (Elliott et al., 1998).
