Use of Digital Technology in the Movie Waking Life

Introduction

Our parents used to watch movies and never wonder how does these movie were made what technology was used, so this is a great opportunity for us analyze and identify what role technology is playing in making of films. Thus, in this paper I am going to discuss the role of technology in filmmaking by specifically focusing on how digital technology helped in making of “Waking Life”. The purpose of this paper is to let readers know about the importance of digital technology usage in today's films and how digital technology made waking life a good to watch movie. Digital technology has entirely changed that way we used to view movies. The 2nd half of the twentieth century marked the arrival of digital technology in film making. Star War was the first movie that used computer generated special effects while in 1982; Torn of Disney used high resolution imagery. With time about 7 years later James Cameron the director of “The Abyss” used computer generated images (CGI) in live action movie. CGI today has improved the process of creating films with animation as well as with live action films.

New digital technology (cameras) captures sharper and clearer footage which fortunately has made special effects increasingly impressive. Digital technology creates dazzling special effects that seem natural and realistic (Jones, 2007, 76). The use of digital technology has huge impact on the plot of the plot, for instance the plot of a movie is weak but the use of digital technology is efficient, than the movie can be successful thus it can be said that digital technology compliments films. Today it is being used in almost every film because it has become more accessible and cheap. The theory of digital technology is trying to capture the process of change, describing, analyzing the media (several different areas of communication), which had just given birth (He, 2002, 91). In other words, digital technology has made film making art much more accessible as decent quality cameras are easily available and editing programs as well.

Waking life

Before going into the detail of how the movie made the most of digital technology we would explain what actually the film was about because it will help us in understanding the concept of film and the need of technological use in it. In Waking life, the film's protagonist meets different people and listen to their reflections on philosophical and esoteric topics (reincarnation, death and life, evolution), which later centred on the nature of his sleep and he start to practice lucid dreaming. In addition, the characters in the movie also speak out on various issues related to life (Schwarzbaum, 2001, 7). The film raised pointed questions regarding the "slave system" in which we live.
