Introduction

At the end of the War of Independence, the thirteen newly independent colonies faced a difficult situation; many people were buried deep in debt during the conflict. However, independence resulted in a contraction of trade between the Caribbean and the port of Boston. Already in debt, the difficulties of citizens were intensified by the insistence of creditors to be paid in hard money. When the Massachusetts assembly refused to accept the plea of the farmers and force the creditors to accept paper money, they revolted against the government.
