TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes

Introduction

Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia, that is, by too high rate of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This disease usually occurs in adults and grows with the age, and the affect of this disease is more obese or surplus weight.

In a healthy individual, the glycemic control is driven by insulin; that is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Insulin allows the entry of sugar into cells so that it gets used as fuel, particularly in muscle and liver. In a person with type 2 diabetes, the body becomes unable to regulate blood sugar that is control the level of glucose in the blood. In the medical terms when the glucose in blood raises the phenomenon called is hyperglycemia). In the long term, if glucose in blood is not reduced by treatments, it can cause serious health problems, particularly cardiovascular problems.

This chronic disease requires individualized treatment and close monitoring by the patient and medical team. Healthy lifestyles are the foundation of the treatment of this disease. If these habits are not enough to lower blood sugar then the medication can be used.

Problem Statement

This paper is to analyze the Type 2 Disease prevailing in the Rio Grande Valley and to discuss the diagnosis and the treatments of this disease.

Research Problem

Type 2 diabetes, is one of the leading morbidity and mortality causes in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). The diabetes related death rate in the region is nearly 25% greater than the state rate. In some areas of the RGV, type 2 diabetes affects 50% of the adult Mexican American population. This is in addition to the fact the health conditions in the RGV are generally worse than in the state of Texas, a considerable cost to the state's taxpayers. As of now, the community health worker (CHW) model represents an emerging resource to assist in addressing the questions of how to deliver quality care in RGV that is affordable, accessible, and culturally competent. CHWs, also known as promoters of health (promoters de salud in Spanish), have been working with marginalized populations in the United States since the 1960s. In a decentralized health system, CHWs form a significant part of the chain as a link to final consumers of health services. This reflects the main objectives of decentralization: improved quality and reduced costs of service delivery. Another important role that CHWs play is promoting health literacy. Several studies identified functional health illiteracy as one of the major impediments to achieving glycemic control among disadvantaged populations, especially Latinos (WHO, 2010)

Diabetes

There are 2 main forms of diabetes, the diabetes type 1 and type 2 diabetes, both are characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Type 1 diabetes occurs in younger people and often appears in childhood. It is caused by destruction autoimmune of the pancreas no longer produces insulin. The cause is unknown and there is no possible prevention at the pre occurrence stage. The people affected are therefore dependent on insulin that is to be administered by injection. As for type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90% of cases of diabetes, it occurs later in life. It is mainly due to a state of insulin ...
