Trends in Immigration

America is one of the few countries that are highly tolerant towards other cultures and ethnicities. This is evident in the diverse population of the country which consists of a sizable minority of people from different ethnicities and cultures. By gaining a deeper and clearer understanding of diversity, I have been able to identify a changing trend in the United States where the local population has become much more tolerant towards immigrants with a different ethnic background (Murdock et al., 2003). For example, in the late nineteenth and twentieth century, America was facing a crisis where immigrants pouring into the country from different parts of Africa were abused, discriminated against and exploited as slaves. Looking at the treatment of the African Americans in the nineteenth century, it is clear that the local American population has become much more educated than before (Murdock et al., 2003).

This is seen in the way they have become increasingly tolerant and understanding towards people with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Diversity of the population has taken place at an alarming place in light of rapid globalization. With the trend of globalization, the geographical boundaries that once separated people of different nations have been erased and this has allowed greater level inter-cultural contact (Murdock et al., 2003). Acquiring knowledge of the rising trend of diversity in America has provided me with a deeper understanding of the important role that ethnically diverse populations groups play in society. As a result, I have become more tolerant towards people belonging to different ethnicities. In addition, the concept of diversity of the American population has also encouraged me to explore my own origin. For example, I now have a much clearer understanding of my cultural, ethnic and racial history (Murdock et al., 2003).

Immigration plays a crucial role in terms of shaping the overall demographics of a country. In the case of the United States, immigration has virtually shaped the demographics over several decades (Brewer, 2000). For example, the United States has welcomed immigrants from its southern borders with Mexico. As a result, there is a very large population of Mexican immigrants living in the United States and this, of course, has directly shaped the demographics of the country. In a similar manner, the constant influx of immigrants from European and Asian countries has also had a significant effect on the demographics of the country because the percentage of people with different ethnicity has increased considerably (Murdock et al., 2003). This has led to rapid diversification of the population of the United States as more and more people have poured into the country from all around the world.

Changes in the trends of immigrations will invariably continue to shape the demographics of the United States. Although the country has introduced tougher immigrations policies over the years that have reduced the pace at which diversification of the population is taking place, there are still a significant volume of people who have immigrated to the United States (Murdock et ...
