Italy has always been the top ranked tourist country from a long time. According to a report by Flash Eurobarometer Survey in 2011, Italy is the most preferred place by Europeans for vacations. It has left behind Spain and France (Research & M, 2003).

Key Events from the History of Italy

The history of Italy dates back to 3rd centuries BC when the Peninsular Italy was conquered by the city of Rome. With the passage of time, Mediterranean and Western Europe were also conquered and became part of empire. In 5th century BC, the Italian part of the Roman Empire declined. The empire also underwent many invasions that resulted in breaking united region into smaller parts. Papal States was also formed after this and was governed by the Catholic Pope. Many cities also emerged including Florence, Venice and Genoa (Hearder, 2001). The movements for Unification and independence increased after the rule of Napoleon on Kingdom of Italy in 19th century. Italy was formed in 1861 when a war broke out between Austria and France in 1859. This resulted in merging of smaller states with Piedmont. The region grew till 1870. Papal States also joined the region and gave rise to the present Italy (Hearder, 2001).

Key People from the History of Italy

Julius Caesar was a civil war winner who set the grounds for transforming the Roman Empire creation. He was the sole ruler of Roman Empire. Caesar was most famous Roman in ancient times. He was assassinated in 44 BCE. Giuseppe Garibaldi was a leading commander of forces in Italian wars in 19th century. He was exiled from South America due to attempt of republican revolution. Garibaldi with him army “Redshirts” played a major role in Italian unification. He also captured Sicily and Naples and included these areas in the Kingdom of Italy. His era was from1807 to 1882. Benito Mussolini was the youngest ever Prime Minister of Italy. He was elected in 1922 by the help of his army working under the name of “Blackshirts”. He formed alliance with Hitler in Germany. He was captured after he fled the World War II. His era was from 1883 to 1945 (Hearder, 2001).
