Concept of Transformative Pedagogy in Schools

Introduction

Education in the United States of America has a long history. Each and every generation of U.S inhabitants has been dependent on schools not only to educate children but also impart fundamental knowledge and lessons that will assist them in fulfilling their future responsibilities. Some children were systematically denied or hindered from receiving quality education whether because of their gender, race, societal status, religion, or some other irrelevant factor. The legacy of education system in the U.S should not be perceived as a linear collective history that all and sundry experienced, regardless of their background. This paper discusses how the individuals transforms the knowledge they attain and modify them. This paper further discuses the concept of Transformative Pedagogy.

Discussion

In spite of the ways in which mission statements of public, independent, and charter schools are written, the great majority of students' experiences in classrooms operate from a linear model of teaching and learning. That is to say, “I [as teacher] give you 'information,' [content]; you [as student] give me back what I presented to you." The job of a student would then be similar to a parrot or a scribe. Again, this is referred to as a linear model of teaching and learning. Thanks to many, many years of research in pedagogy and communications, we now know that each of us transforms what we “are taught.” We modify, through the unique ways in which each of us processes information (via concepts such as temperament or social class) the ideas and thoughts of others into our own ways of understanding; we learn actively by hands-on discovery or by minds-on inquiry (asking questions); we think about what is presented as truth, real, and accurate according to our own lives; we, thus, come to know. Learning, real learning, is not at all a night-before-the-test activity. It is a dynamic, fascinating interaction among 1)the content to be understood as it interacts 2)with adults in charge and peers and 3) the student. Not at all a linear model, this more complicated paradigm recognizes the complexities and experiences that each of us brings to a learning situation.

Pedagogy

Pedagogy or the process of teaching is a term used to refer to strategies of instruction, or a style of instruction. Social institutions, developed because they have to meet the basic needs of society and education meet the critical need to transmit knowledge. This primary function (transmission of knowledge), fulfilled in three ways: the preservation, dissemination and knowledge innovation. The preservation of knowledge is partly complies with the teaching that is the way knowledge is passed from one generation to another. At all times the pedagogical practice aimed at developing the quality human, successful mindset, ability to labor and delivery, the expression creative play, the investigative spirit and sense of belonging to their surroundings natural and cultural heritage (Knowles, 1980).
