ADTM Tour Operations Assignment

Introduction

From the instant the tour operators emerged in the market, the individual type of tourism has been complemented by package holiday tourism that has transformed itinerary and enabled a wide range of people to join worldwide tourism flows (Gartner & Lime, 2000, p.325). Thus, tour operators hold an immense importance in the world of tourism; however, they need to create highly effective tour packages with high efficiency in terms of marketing, costing, and target audience of the itinerary. So, this paper provides a practical example of itinerary planning by a tour operator, which exemplifies the understanding of global market for tour operations while compiling a worldwide tour including its marketing and costing aspects.

The group package created by an outgoing tour operator is particularly for UK residing group of 19 pax including couples and singles who are at an age of 35 and above. The package offers adventure specialist, who will guide tourists throughout the journey to beautiful island of Kota Kinabalu. Tourism trip will be arranged during summer, which is the most suitable weather to enjoy the beauty of South Eastern Malaysian Islands. The 14 days trip to Kota Kinabalu will include water and in-land transport along with recreational activities.

Itinerary

The inland and water transport service will best meet the travelling need of target group. During 14-days trip, target audience i.e. couples and singles aged 35+ will be guided through the beautiful scenery, rivers, national parks, and other local locations that make up the beautiful face of this island. Adventure specialist will lead the group through initial 7-days and the tour will be comprised of exciting recreational activities. Scheduled tour will also include breakfast and lunch facility, which will not be cost applicable during adventure specialist tour. For the next five days, tourist group of 19pax will only be provided with accommodation facility and they will be given an opportunity to self-explore the natural beauty of Sabah (IPSOS, 2009, p. 2).

Costing

Every service transportation facility will be cost applicable including one way flight on international and domestic routes, three nights at a local hotel, one day trip to National Park, two days tour to the River of Kinabatangan and one day visit to Turtle Island (IPSOS, 2009, p. 2). In addition to this, five days stay at a local resort will cost 1100MYR per day. Cost breakdown is based on the exchange rate of £1 = RM4.91. Gross costs, net costs and profit on individual and group basis are illustrated by table 1 given in appendix (Journey Malaysia, 2013, p. n.d). The costs that will be incurred throughout the tour are well covered by the profit estimates that will be discussed in the summary.
