Introduction

Discussion

Therapeutic communication with the patient is integral for instant recovery of a patient and has high relevance in the nursing profession. Being part of the nursing profession, one has to make sure to take up important skills and attitudes which are essential when starting a therapeutic communication with the patient. The therapeutic communication with the patient is a professional relationship based on a process of interaction and social influence aimed at healing the sick. The therapeutic relationship could be defined as one in which there is a very close and healthy interaction between the therapist and patient in helping the patient come out of the disease. Therefore it is considered as a process, method or instrument, whereby the meanings are transmitted between patients and nurses (Martin & Street, 2003).

While carrying out this exercise, nurses make sure to have a very healthy and interactive relationship with all patients to aid them in rapid recovery. There arise many problems when communication is poor between the patient and the nurse. Patients feel unimportant, when no one is giving them attention and this slows down their recovery too. Between 30 and 50% of patients show no adherence to treatment as a result of poor communication with staff. The lack of information about disease processes causes a delay in seeking treatment and deteriorates the case of the patient.
