Topic 01: Why is there religious conflict?

Religious conflicts have existed throughout most of history. Because religion has managed to convince many people that the ideas they propose are the real and must defend them, and this led to fanaticism.

For example, within the Christian religion began in the sixteenth century with the counter-reform and Catholic. The Zionists, meanwhile, argued that Jews had to have a country and put as Palestinian territory, UN eventually gave them a part of Palestine called Israel, but this conflict is not strictly religious.

Origin and Causes

Historical clashes

One of the most important historical clashes was the Inquisition this was a court established by the Roman Catholic Church; in the middle Ages to suppress any kind of religion that was not Catholic. In Europe in the sixteenth century, there were many religious clashes between Catholics and Protestants; one of the most important was the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). There was a dispute that existed between European powers to achieve an equilibrium or hegemony. This war ended with the Peace of Westphalia and the Peace of the Pyrenees.

The examples provided by the conflicts used to enter the functions that religion can fill when taken in the political turmoil. Religion is, very often, especially in countries where it has been associated with national history, identity as a substitute for political identities in crisis or bankruptcy. It replaces a failed national identity and becomes the unifying element, both sacred but also how secular, militant solidarity when the national community erupted. In conflicts, religion becomes a mobilizing factor. It is invoking the defense that we educate opinion, be called to form militias. The religious authorities themselves can directly get involved in the mobilization and lead, as we have seen in many recent conflicts.
