Organized crime has a definite structure along with organizing principles and therefore, can be analyzed as a social institution. There are many different ways in which the term social institution applies to organized crime, which will be evaluated in this paper. Furthermore, different empirical and speculative theories highly applicable to organized crime and criminal behavior will be discussed in detail to explain the different factors that lead to criminal behavior and organizations.
