Abstract

The human mind has the ability to create fresh memories, accumulate them for long durations and bring to mind when they need and thus, in this way they can interact with the world around them. The study of human mind and the process of memory are concerned for several scientists and philosophers from thousands of years. In the present days, the study of human memory and mind is related to the specialization area of cognitive psychology and neuroscience and thus, the interdisciplinary link between the two has been established which is termed as cognitive neuroscience. The major contribution of memory sciences and neuroscience is relating with the ability that can provide the understanding about the development of cognitive process of memory, which is responsible for shaping the mind as well as body. The study of the process of memory can explain the mechanism of development of neurological and biological systems of brain.

The Process of Memory

Introduction

The human memory is defined as a full cabinet in which an individual is storing information and it may consider as a neural super computer which has a great speed and capacity in order to store the vast variety of information. However, in modern scientific world many experts believe that the process of memory is much more complicated than it has been perceived. Memory is snot stored in a single unit of brain rather it has covered the wider portion of brain. However, memory is not confined to a simple and single process since; different types of memories are also exits which are present in different parts of brain. Thus, memory can be defined as the ability of an individual in order to encode, store and retain along with the recall the particular information which is obtained from the precedent occurrences in the brain. Memory is the thing which defines the total sum of the remembering and it gives the ability to people to develop their learning from the past experiences which is useful in terms of building the relationships with the surroundings (Diamond & Amso, 2008).

Types of Memory

Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) identified the three types of memory which includes sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Normally people think that memory is the function of long-term memory, but in fact, short term memory and sensory memory processes are worked together to form long-term memory. However, these three different types of memories have their own particular functions, but together these are considered as the essential steps in the process of making, storing and recalling of memory. The sensory memory is defined as the shortest-term memory since; it has the ability to preserve the sensory information after the original memory has been over. Its function is maintained as the buffer for the stimulus through the activity of five senses which include sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, in a ...
