The Positive Benefits of Immigration
Introduction
“Immigration does have its disadvantages: greater poverty, increase in crimes, lower unskilled wage, education costs, and a few others. However, the positive benefits of immigration far outweigh the disadvantages in many ways” (Benefits of everything that matter, 2011). Therefore, welcoming change will also welcome the positive benefits that immigration provides the country. Native Americans are considered true Americans because they occupied the U.S. before prehistoric times. People from all over the world migrated to the U.S. whether by force or by choice, and as a result today the American people has gotten accustom to a blended America. “There are many fears or concerns regarding the influx of illegal immigrants into the United States. Security is a concern but the primary argument of most politicians against Immigration amnesty revolves around the economic hardship illegal immigration costs American citizens” (Shusterman 2002). Some of the benefits of immigration are economic gains, skilled workers and a younger workforce.
Most experts seem to agree that the U.S. economy is bigger and growing faster due to the influx of undocumented workers. But the debate becomes most intense when trying to determine who wins and who loses as a result of immigration and how much.
Certain sectors of the economy clearly attract more immigrant workers than others. Chief among them is the construction industry which employs an estimated 2.4 million foreign-born workers.
This means that 22% of all jobs in the construction sector are held by immigrants, of whom nearly two-thirds believed that would be illegal. Agriculture, cleaning, building maintenance and food preparation are other jobs with high probability of being in the hands of immigrants.
Thesis Statement
Economists and some Americans believe that immigration has to be restricted to protect the American people and its economy even though immigration is the foundation on which the United States was built.
