The main purpose of this paper is to identify the role of United States Bureau of Immigration and identify the basic reasons and the agency behind the foundation of United States Bureau of Immigration. The paper also discusses the functions and the law enforcement investigations made by the agency.

The United States Bureau of Immigration is considered to be the first federal government entity which has been developed for the purpose of standardizing all the immigration related operations occurring in United States. The US Bureau of Immigration works to enforce the legislations which have been passed by the congress of United States regarding the status of immigrants who want to enter in United States.

Date Founded

The United States Bureau of Immigration has been founded on 3rd March 1891.

How it is funded?

Firstly, there were different agencies for funding the United States Bureau of Immigration. The different agencies were there to provide the funds to the Bureau. The United States of Bureau has never received the ample funds for the purpose of performing all the tasks which have been assigned to it. For many years, the responsibility of funding the United States Bureau of Immigration has been shifted to different departments of government (Ilona, 2011). Later on in 1903, it has also become a part of the Department of Commerce and Labor which has just been developed.

Structure of the organization

There are continuous changes in the structure of the United States Bureau of Immigration. The Bureau had been developed for the purpose of performing the immigration functions and develop the different policies related to the immigration. Thus, the structure of the Bureau kept on changing with times. The Immigration and Naturalization Service announced major changes in its structure. From now patrol missions should be clearly separated from the immigrant services offices. The agency will continue to be led by a single commissioner (now is the lawyer and banker James Ziglar). As part of the restructuring, the Office of Services will be led by an executive commissioner, who is in charge of all services and benefits to immigrants. These services include the processing of applications for citizenship, asylum and immigration status change, work permits, renewal of residence, migration and petitions for relatives and persons authorized to work in the United States (Peter, 2009). The Patrol Bureau is directed by another executive commissioner. Authorities have described the functions of the commissioner as "critical" to ensure the national security of the United States and combating illegal migration in border and ports of entry, as well as within the country. In the new structure, INS employees will have greater responsibility for their actions and better defined roles. The restructuring includes the unification of labor between the Border Patrol and the Department of Investigations, Inspections and Intelligence.
