Chapter # 03: Methodology

This chapter is providing a detailed outline of the research design of this study. This chapter is also expanding on the elements of the research design, in particular, and towards the research approach. In considering methodology for this study, the researcher interviewed the health care professionals and also used the survey technique.

Methodology in research studies refer to the principle methods of data collection (Bowling, 2009). The methodology is presented in order to explain how the material was gathered and selected for in depth consideration (Aveyard, 2008). The methodology will also endeavour to offer a reasonable rational for the decisions made to carry out a research.

Research Design

The structure of the research was based on the qualitative approach in order to collect data related to the impact of shortage of nursing on health care industry. The following chapter will provide an overall analysis of the methods of research that will be used to find out the data related to the topic of the study. According to Maxwell (2005) there are several methods on the basis of which qualitative research designs will provide in-depth and comprehensive data related to the research topic.

Qualitative data helped in seeking to explore the impact of nursing shotage on the health care industry by using instruments that are flexible; this type of method has an eliciting style which encourages people to conduct their research on the relevant research topic and enables the researchers to properly categorize their information according to the research questions designed. The qualitative data in the form of previous researches and studies as mentioned in different articles, magazines, journals and on the internet provided a detailed description of the factors that have direct and indirect influence of the nursing shortage on the health care industry. Qualitative study has several objectives that are significant for the researchers to include them in collecting data related to the topic of the study. Firstly qualitative data is collected in large quantities due to which it is able to provide variation in the study and helped us in considering all the factors that could have influenced the health care industry. Qualitative methods are not based on any structure and thus include free hand information from different authentic sources in relation to the topic of the study.

The most popular research approaches used to make informed scientific decisions include qualitative and quantitative methods (Neuman, 2005; Polit, 2003). Differences between quantitative and qualitative research lie in their approach to the identification of the research problems and reviews of the literature. The two approaches have different strategies in specifying the purpose, data collection, data analysis, reporting, and evaluating research (Burns et al., 2005; Polit, 2003). In identifying a research problem, Creswell (2004) claimed that it is descriptive and explanatory for quantitative but exploratory for qualitative research.

Both quantitative and the qualitative approach proved ...
