Introduction
Nursing Turnover is a major issue which impacts the profitability and performance of healthcare organizations. Health care organizations require nurses who are highly trained, stable and effective in providing patient care. The shortage of qualified nurses has increased the rate of turnover among nurses. This turnover rate can worsen in the upcoming years as the healthcare industry continues to grow and the supply of nurses is not sufficient. It is also expected that the shortage of nurses can be till 1 million by 2020 (Clark, Springer, 2010). The increase of workload requirement increase clinical and research expectation and non competitive salaries is increasing the turnover rate in nursing. The most important factor responsible for this is increase clinical and research expectations, non competitive salaries and increases in workload requirements. In most health care organizations nurse have direct contact with patients. As a result of this they play an important role in the financial performance of health care organizations. It is estimated that the financial cost of losing a nurse is equal to twice of the nurse annual salary. It is also observed that a hospital can lose about $300, 000 per year for increase of the annual nurse turnover. It is also estimated that the nursing loss is contributing to 15 million dollars per year (Brendtro, Hegge, 2008).
The rationale of this research is to determine the strategies which can be used to retain staff in Renfrey Memorial Hospital. Job dissatisfaction, non competitive salaries, increased workload is leading to increased nursing faculty to leave their profession at domestic and national level. This study provides the study about Renfrey Memorial Hospital and examining the nursing turnover causes.
