ABSTRACT

Employee engagement in a university setting is a very important thing in a university setting as the commitment and dedication of employees; especially, teachers, make a huge influence of students of the university. This study had an aim to determine whether there is a relationship between the University of Derby business schools staff engagement results and the business school students overall experience. To achieve this aim, the researcher had applied the realism approach to research and utilized a questionnaire survey to analyze the employee engagement and student experiences in the University of Derby. The analysis of the responses of the employee engagement had showed that the employee engagement was low in the University of Derby. This had made an impact on the student experiences in the University of Derby and overall the students were not completely satisfied with the employees of the University of Derby. The recommended solution for the enhancement of employee engagement at the University of Derby was to work on the motivation of the employees, which would enhance the level of employee engagement and consequently, the student experience at Derby University.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Education gives the students of a nation with the knowledge and tools, which they might require to realize and enter in the corporate world. Education assists a person in sustaining the human values, which would go on to lead to collective welfare of the society and individual welfare of an individual. ENESCO had described education as the foundation for womb-to-tomb learning (UNESCO, 2006). Numerous factors influence the failure or success of a student in the educational system; nevertheless, the single most significant factor in the learning of the student is the engagement of the teachers and other staff of the college (Ascher & Fructer, 2001). The process of teaching is a very complicated process and numerous factors influence on the student experience from a college. In the opinion of Danielson (1996), a teacher has to make around three thousand non-trivial decisions on a daily basis; nearly all of the decisions usually lie in one of the four different areas, i.e. preparation and planning for class, management of the classroom, professional responsibilities, and instructional practices. All of these areas are constituted of a complicated set of inter-dependent elements, in which, the staff of a school, especially, teachers strain to develop a positive experiences for learning for students.
