ABSTRACT

Angola has a long history of colonialism. This dissertation highlights Angola's colonial past, with reference to the in-humane practices that prevailed during the long Portuguese rule. This paper also presents an insight into the plight of Angolan people and the difficulties they faced in practicing their religious and traditional beliefs. In an even clearer characterisation, it constituted the beating heart of the projects of struggle of their liberation movements, some of them involved in what became protracted anti-colonialist armed conflicts. In different forms of formulation and, at least in the cases of Angola, of its concrete, although incipient materialisation, the dream of an anti-colonial regional reconstruction with its correspondent political, social, economic and institutional objectives was however aborted. The first chapter provides an introduction to the topic, including the problem statement and purpose of the study. The second chapter deals with the literature review, providing theoretical framework and other relevant themes. The methodology is presented in the third chapter, while analysis of findings is included in the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter concludes the dissertation, while providing recommendations and implications for future research.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Colonialism is not a static concept. Its importance in history, sociology, economics, and political science is persistent. The understanding of how colonialism affects humanity is in constant flux within these various disciplines. Geography assumes a unique position in the understanding of colonialism (Thomas, 1994, 28). The geographic perspective differs from other disciplines, which usually only study one scale and location rather than employing a collective spatial approach.

The geographic perspective can view the role of land use alteration for detecting cultural interaction, cultural diffusion, and migration, at the local, regional, and global scales, simultaneously. Culture fashions landscapes by defining land use. The majority of colonial landscapes are multicultural; they are crafted out of traditional land use and imported colonial practices imposed on the territory (Rodney, 1982, 69). Landscapes as used here refer to visually detectable practices, and physical land control. There are obvious differences between native subsistence whether pastoral, nomadic, ...
