Writing and speaking fall under the category of productive skills while, Reading and listening are categorized as Receptive skills. It is important to keep in mind that all these skills are not learned simultaneously. Listening skills are learned prior to speaking and reading is learned before writing. In other word, development of listening ability helps in attaining effective speaking skills and development of reading help is learning writing. It is said that one's ability to master these skills mostly depends on one degree of motivation.

Reading and writing are the most essential skills that a child learns from a very young age. However, it becomes difficult to invoke that interest in some children who find reading and writing to be tedious work. Make them watch educational shows which encourage children to read and write. Play word games like scrabble or word power. Make sure that you make reading and writing enjoyable for your child. Tell your children the advantages of reading and writing. While your child is reading a book ask them questions in between so that the session is interactive as well. The best time for reading can be bed time reading stories they are interesting and they will also improve your child's vocabulary. (Scrivener, J., 2011)
