Introduction

In the year 2007, Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Limited was developed through the collaboration of forces between John Laing and Viridor. The activities performed by Viridor Laing Great Manchester Activity includes implementation of individual weekly site meetings to discuss solutions and problems identified by those on the ground and to feed these back into the planning process, managing a contract with Viridor as a subcontractor operating existing energy generation facilities and recycling in Greater Manchester and the new sites as they are built, working in partnership with the Great Manchester Waste Disposal Authority to project manage the overhaul of Great Manchester's waste management services, introducing face-to-face Service Delivery Group meetings to report on the practical delivery of the contract, to make planning decisions and to drive actions forward and overseeing a major construction programme encompassing forty three developments across twenty seven sites, delivered by building firm Costain (Case, 2000, pp.90). Viridor is one of the UK's leading renewable energy, waste management and recycling companies and a part of the FTSE 250 Pennon Group. The Viridor offers waste and full range of recycling services and other services includes: efficient and safe landfill disposal, transport, treatment, glass reprocessing, and collection, waste to energy, composting and advanced materials recycling (Chambers & Partners, 2004, pp.486). The company handles c. 10. 5 million tonnes of waste material generates over 101 megawatts of renewable energy and recycles over 2 million tonnes of waste annually.

Discussion

A twenty five year waste and recycling agreement between Viridor Laing (Great Manchester) and Great Manchester Waste Disposal Authority were signed, it was a partnership between John Laing and Viridor signed in the year 2009 (Anderson, 2008, pp.117). The Europe's largest ever waste deal was signed, to create a system of modern services to treat Greater Manchester's waste (Calow & Peter, 2009, pp.402). It was £3.8 billion contract and inclusive of £631 million construction programme. To accomplish household waste across nine districts of Great Manchester in an economically and ecological method, The Viridor Laing Great Manchester provides services and facilities (Campbell, 2007, pp.87). The project was inclusive of reduce, recovery and composting waste sent to landfill, the reception and disposal and treatment of waste to increase levels of recycling. Across Great Manchester, a network of redeveloped and new waste management facilities and redeveloped recycling was introduced. The Great Manchester Waste Limited is a company controlled and owned by the Great Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, handling over 1.4 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually. The Bolton Thermal Recovery Facility produces energy from waste by recovering heat from the combustion process; the plants are operated alongside the newly refurbished Bolton Thermal Recovery Facility (Case, 2000, pp.90). The Great Manchester Waste operates into four materials services that practice over forty five percent of the Municipal Solid Waste that is generated from the throughout the region.
