Introduction
Healthcare is one of the basic human needs and for the sector to be able to provide premium quality services, it is imperative to conduct research on an ongoing basis. The Institute Of Medicine report was published in the year 2010 on October 5 along with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) (Forum, 2010). The report focuses on many critical elements of nursing. According to the report, nursing is one of the largest components of healthcare delivery system. It has implications not only on nursing practice, but also on nursing education and the role of nurses as a leader.
The impact of IOM on nursing education
The IOM report highlighted the need for nursing education to change. This means that a change is needed not only in the curriculum but also in the teaching methodology employed in nursing education. The nursing education that is provided in the United States if America is relatively expensive. Hence, a lot of women who aspire to take up nursing as profession find it inaccessible. This is especially true for specialist nursing education such as the advanced modules in nursing. In addition, many nurses only have the associate degree as the number of seats in the baccalaureate degree is limited. The much advancement in the curriculum worldwide and the field of nursing in general are not accounted for in the US nursing curriculum.
This education will serve to address the misconceptions in the minds of people and nurses themselves on their role in the healthcare delivery system.
