Introduction

Teamwork is known to be a significant factor in shaping the successful performance of organizations. Many organizations have looked to form teams in order to achieve their organizational goals in the minimum time possible. Since most of the projects require personnel that carry diverse skills, teamwork becomes one of the top priorities for organizations. It is a usual occurrence in many organizational settings that all managers do not deliver the best results. Throughout the course of this paper, we would look to differentiate between self directed work teams and high performance teams as some of the managers have not been able to match the company's expectations. It is vital to assess the reasons behind the varying performance of managers with regards to these two types of teams (Strauss, Griffin, & Rafferty, 2009).

Self Directed Work Teams

A self directed work team is composed of personnel that combine the different skills and competencies in order to work without the aspect of managerial supervision. They look to align their skills and competencies with the aims of self directed work teams so as to ensure that the team's performance does not suffer. A self directed work team is permanent in nature and thus is not always confined to a specific set of project. A self directed work team as the name signifies looks to use the individualistic skills and competencies (Boxall, & Macky, 2009).

As a result, it is more focused on the direct supervision of individuals rather than managed by a team leader. Self directed work teams rely on their company's mission statement for developing the core objective of their creation. The major objectives for the creation of a self directed work team is to conduct career training, product improvement, enhance sales and productivity and problem solving.
