Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to study and examine task group and treatment group for Youth aged between 12 and 18 years who live in Australia. There are two different types of groups: task group and treatment groups, which could be used with a specific context and with one group of people in a target population. For this paper, Australian youth group has been selected aged between 12 and 18 years. This essay discusses the basis of selection, compare and contrast the application and process of task and treatment group, and demonstrate understanding of work role of the target population. The paper also compares and contrasts both groups on the process and application basis.

Discussion

A group is formed by having membership of two or more individuals. In other words, group can be defined as a collection of people who interact on a frequent basis, work together to achieve a common goal, common camaraderie feelings, and have mutual influence. In general, there must be a sense of common identity, which refers to a sense among individuals that they are part of a group and have common or shared aims/goals. Moreover, it is essential that within the group, all members must have a sense of interdependence and interaction, which helps them in achieve a common goal (Toseland & Rivas, 2011, pp.18-530).

The selected population group for this assignment would be Youth who resides in Australia aged between 12 and 18 years. These individuals are young populace and future of Australia. Adolescence refers to the most difficult time of people's life as most of them face a range of lifestyle challenge, as well as it is difficult for them to choose the right path. Youth group are active communicators, and are frequent adaptors of new technology and channels of communication, which is advantageous for them to enter work or social groups. Within the youth group, it is easy to change and modify values and way traditional group operates. Since, youth is in a phase of development, they apt to adopt new process and it is easy for them to accept change. This acceptance will eventually increase their propensity to participate in the tasks that interest them (Fabiansson, 2007, pp.31-49).

In Australia, substance abuse is drastically affecting the youth population. Alcohol is among the three prevailing causes of death among teenagers; include suicide, homicide and injury in the short-term. However, in the long-term, substance abuse can damage the brain development and results in learning and problem solving difficulties. According to a survey conducted by Australian School Students Alcohol and Drug in 2011, 40% of youth consume alcohol, 17% inhalants, 14.8% cannabis, 3% hallucinogens, 2.9% amphetamines, 2.7% ecstasy, 2% steroids without prescription of doctor, 1.7% cocaine, and 1.6% heroin.
