Supportive Communication

Supportive Communication

In this paper we will discuss the principles of Supportive communication and supportive listening with respect to a case of conversation between Ron and Mike.

Discussion

Violated principles of Supportive Conversation in the Case

The conversation is not descriptive and non-evaluative. Since Mike started the conversation being evaluative about the performance of Ron directly from the beginning. Moreover, the conversation is completely person oriented instead of being problem oriented. Furthermore, the conversation has lost the level of respect and areas of agreement together with collaboration and flexibility. Sine, Ron is neither ready to collaborate with Mike nor he is ready to be flexible. In addition, it can be seen that the conversation lacks the conjunction; the later message is not conjunctive to the former message. In addition, both the participants of the conversation are not ready to listen to each other, thus it lacks supportive listening (Wolvin, 2011).

Change for productive conversation

If I were to change the conversation to make it more productive I make the conversation start with humble and casual conversation. In this way the conversation could have been made supportive. Ron should have started in humble manner to inform Mike about the agenda of the meeting. Moreover, he should have provided alternative to the problems discussed in the conversation rather than being judgmental. Furthermore, Ron should have used the problem oriented approach rather then being person-oriented. On the other hand, Mike should have provided proper reasoning to Ron for his practices rather than using the fighting tone (Whetten & Cameron, 2010).
