Statement of Purpose

I was just an ordinary kid. All I did was, went to school and came back home. No one knew me, and the ones who did, for them was only a 'book worm'. Nonetheless, time passed, and I came to high school. I was always a very shy and introvert person. There was only one most prominent thing in my life: books. They all looked the same but had different colors. I was a bit apprehensive of them at first. Then I spoke to my mother, and it revealed on me that these thick looking books meant hours of homework. My mother was a very intelligent woman and she covered my apprehensions for books by telling me bedtime stories. I loved the idea of my mom reading me books by the bedside. It was amazing. This created a relationship between me and books. For some reason, I started reading them. I began with reading short story books and moved up to reading books of middle school level. These were novels on science, mystery, action, suspense and fiction. I liked my collection of books.

Reading took me to another world, a world that I would create in my own imagination. So reading was good because it helped me understand myself better. I gave meaning to someone else's words. My favorite book at the time was So You Want to be a Wizard. I picked it up because I liked the color and as I read it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed it so much because I could relate to the characters in the book. The kids in the book had wizardly powers, and they made me think maybe I too was extraordinary in some way. They inspired me so much, the characters, that I thought of them all the time. I wanted to be like them, I wanted to be special. They conquered their fears and went on different missions. I conquered mine, and I worked very hard at school. I got straight As. My improved performance at school boosted my confidence. I worked hard, got excellent grades and worked still harder. I wanted to bring myself out of books, so I participated actively in various extracurricular activities.

One thing that has helped me a lot throughout my life is my habit of being in a state of self analysis all the time. Hence, I knew I was not the best, but I told myself to hang on. I knew that I have to let go of my fears. If the characters in my favorite storybook can overcome their fear by magic, then I can overcome my fear through practice. I had so many examples to motivate me. If it was not for failure, we would not value our success.

In the junior year, I was mature enough to realize that this is the time where I need to start thinking about my ...
