Sports: Coach Athlete Relationship

Abstract

The relationship between the athlete and his coach is unique, complex and has different facets. Several studies show that the quality of this relationship plays a crucial role in the outcome of sporting success and satisfaction in interpersonal (Smith and Smoller, 1996). The research conducted so far in the sport became more interested in intrapersonal parameters (such as group cohesion, leadership and behavioral interaction) than interpersonal aspects. In this study, particular attention is given to local construction, co-orientation and complementarily, as evidenced by Jowett and colleagues (Jowett and Cockerill, 2003; Jowett and Meek, 2000), defining the relationship as an interpersonal set of emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Thus, the constructs of proximity (emotional interdependence and/or emotional), co-orientation (communication, exchanges) and complementarily (cooperative and effective interaction) were used for the analysis of the coach-athlete relationship in order to better understand the dynamics in this relationship so special.

Introduction

In today's sports has increased dramatically the role of coach. The success of an individual athlete or team, especially at the initial stage of preparation, by 60-70% depends on the activities of the coach. Spending it with her students for 6-7 hours a day at 2-3-one-time training for 8-10 years, the coach has the opportunity to thoroughly examine their students to learn the nuances of their character, the right to influence the mental state of extreme training and competitions (Jowett, 2007). However, such long-standing collaboration, Keeps emotions to one side or another, makes great demands on interpersonal relationships in the system, "the coach - athlete". Interest in the factors and causes of positive or negative attitudes led to a series of studies that have shown that coaches build their relations with students focusing primarily on their specific sporting qualities and only then - on personality, which is estimated under the influence of the former (LaVoi, 2007).

Discussion

Sporting activities has specific requirements for physical, intellectual and specific qualities of people who have decided to dedicate her most of her life. Naturally, the coach should pick up the students with suitable for this sport quality. Giftedness and talent of athletes to help deal effectively with specific problems, largely determine the ratio of coach to the students (Rosado, 2007). Needs and values ??trainer are also very important factors in establishing a positive relationship between teacher and students. The fact that the coach selects those students who because of their qualities and abilities can be put into practice all of its concepts and attitudes to implement his plans and ambitions in life, to assist him in meeting his needs associated with the desire to occupy a higher status in society. High score for coach specific sports as a student creates his positive attitude and their personal qualities (there is transfer of ...
