Literature Review

While conducting any research it is imperative to develop immense knowledge and information about that topic. To get this information literature review plays vital part. Literature review gives a researcher a deep insight of the topic. To get the understanding of the topic spinal cord injuries and leisure activities I went through the literature related to this field. This literature review not only gives us the information about the topic but it also reveals facts and figures of past study.

First research that I came under my consideration was an interesting one. According to this research loss of motor or sensory function occurs when the spinal cord gets damage and this is called spinal cord injury. (Buchholz et al, 2009)

This study suggests that when an individual suffers from any spinal cord injury he or she stops participating in any physical activity. (Tasiemski et al. 2000)

This inability to participate in physical activities may lead an individual to develop cardiovascular diseases. LTPA are so important that they can reduce the chances of an individual to suffer from any chronic CVD and type 2 diseases up to 30 to 50%. (Bassuk and Manson 2005),

By considering all these facts Buchholz et al made an attempt to determine the relationship between the different factors that can cause cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes and leisure time physical activities among the members of the community having spinal cord injury. In order to conduct this study, they gathered 76 men and women and all these 76 men and women had paraplegia and tetraplegia. Following data were gathered about these 76 men and women.

Body mass index

Waist circumference

Body composition

Blood pressure

Biochemical data

After collecting this information the survey was undertaken. To gather all that information they have adopted the method of telephone survey and received information directly from the homes of the participants. Different tests were performed by proper consent of participants and later the findings of the tests were analyzed. Findings of the study showed following details.

First thing that data collection for this study reveals that the ration of women and tetraplegics was same as determined by the Canadian SCI population. According to Canadian SCI population the proportion of women and tetraplegics is 20% and 50% (i.e. 20% women and 50% tetrplegics) and this proportion was same in the population of these survey 21% women and 46% tetraplegics. (Buchholz et al, 2009)

Second thing that was revealed in this study was that no major differences were found between the distribution of age, level of injury, number of years after the injury or gender and active or inactive participants. (Buchholz et al, 2009)

Another revelation was that those participants who were active participants they showed the pattern of indulging in to very moderate kind of activities. (Buchholz et al, 2009)

Participants who had paraplegia were showed that they utilize 47% more minutes in activities when compared with those who ...
