Introduction

Domestic violence and abuse is the willful bullying, physical assault, battering, sexual assault or any other kind of violent or offensive behavior of a person against another person. It is a plague that is affecting many individuals in a community regardless of their age, religion, race, economic status, nationality or educational background. Women victims of violence usually engage in emotionally abusive and controlling behavior which creates a systematic pattern of dominance and control.

Child and women abuse is reported extensively on a daily basis on various grounds. More than three million reports regarding child abuse are made every year in the United States of America. These reports even include multiple children. The end of year 2009 saw an approximate number of 3.3 million reports regarding child abuse that involved around six million children. Similarly, it is estimated that one out of every four women will encounter domestic violence in her lifetime. There are Around 1.3 million women who are reported to be victims of physical assault every year. Around eighty five percent of domestic violence victims include women.

Thesis Statement

The result of violence and abuse is physical injury, psychological trauma and sometimes even death and its consequences can cross generations even and last a lifetime. Therefore it is very necessary that we make every effort to combat it.

Causes and Consequences

The child and women abuse statistics are alarming. The rate at which this epidemic is taking place, is not only affecting the victims and the people around them, but it is affecting the overall economy as well. According to a study Child abuse is reported every ten seconds and more than five children lose their lives everyday due to child abuse. Around eighty percent of these children, who die as a victim of child abuse, are under the age of four. Child and women abuse takes place at all socio economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, in all religions and at almost all levels of education. According to child abuse related statistics, about thirty percent of abused and neglected children are expected to abuse their own children in the future and continue the terrible abuse cycle. About eighty percent of child abuse victims around the age of twenty one have at least one psychological disorder. Children who are a victim of abuse are 59 percent expected to be arrested as an immature, twenty eight percent are expected to be arrested as an adult and thirty percent expected to commit some kind of a violent crime. They are less likely to practice safe sex and twenty five percent of these victims are expected to get pregnant as teenagers.

Similarly, according to the statistical data of women abuse or domestic violence, a woman is abused every 9 seconds in the United States and ninety five percent of domestic violence victims are women and this abuse results in thirty percent disabilities in women.
