Introduction

Leadership in nursing is playing a vital role the healthcare. There is increasing proof in the literature of nursing regarding the optimistic effect of environment of healthy work on the satisfaction of staff, their retention, enhanced outcomes of patient, and performance.

According to a recently published report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”, there have been calls from various segments of nursing for the adaptation of leadership roles in the profession. Supporters of the idea believe that the nurses should work in collaboration with other health care professional to bring about a change in the systems of healthcare delivery (Wise, 2007). The report was published by the Institute of Medicine and states that due to the central nature of the role of nurses in patient care, they can provide with precious suggestions and insight into the efforts being made for reforms and design of healthcare systems.

Though it has take some time in coming, but the management of healthcare institutions have finally realized the importance of having a workforce of competent and committed nurses. Having such nurses can lead to an increase in patient satisfaction and raise the level of team performance along with the patient outcomes (Aiken, 2009). The roles of nurses now entail the following responsibilities;

Managing the performance of nurses from a perspective of quality, patient, finance and human resource. This is not limited to inpatients and outpatients but extends to clinical departments, institutions and service management.

Perform an integral role in creation, sustaining and advancing a culture that focuses on patient safety while maintain quality. Nurses are also responsible for contribution to the accomplishment of official approval of efforts.

Nurses are now required to be participants of research teams and head evidence-based studies being conducted at various research facilities.

Nursing is a respectable profession and, patients have strong and affectionate bonding with nurses. If nurses are not motivated to their job targets then, patients may feel restless and, uncomfortable to lie in such hospitals. It is the main focus of each nurse to provide relaxation to their patients who may suffer from any physical and mental diseases. The first most aim of every nurse is to satisfy their patients by providing strong motivation (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2007).

Operation theatres and emergency cases of medical therapies are like buildings on fire where, there is always a danger and risk of patients' life. The team leader of nurses has to prepare his mind that, he or she will not leave the room until a successful operation is made.
