A man should prefer mating with the most prolific young woman, because it is most likely to bring him children. A woman should prefer mating with men who have high social status and the solid material resources with those who can best ensure the survival of children until they reach self-sufficiency and self-reproductive age (Petersen & Hyde, 2010). As a result, men should prefer younger women (who still have a lot of fertile age), whereas women should prefer older men (who have more resources). This gender difference in preferences when choosing a partner is firmly confirmed in a study 37 cultures.

Since it is theoretically possible that a man becomes a father hundreds of children, for it will be an evolutionary advantage to fertilize as many women as possible to pass more genes. The woman, however, have to invest much time and energy in every birth, and has limited ability in the number of offspring. Therefore, priority will be for her careful choice of a partner who wants more and more able to help in protecting and growing children, so as to maximize the chance of passing their genes to future generations. From this logic, it follows that the evolution was to make men more frivolous and unscrupulous in his choice of sexual partners than women.
