Introduction

Certain issues and psychological problems have existed since the beginning of times, however, with the advances in fields of study and the progress in knowledge has led to various researches and studies that seek to analyze these issues and look for their solutions. This implies that although the issues existed even before, they were not considered as seriously as they are today, and no researches were carried out on them before this time. It is eminent to mention here that social problems and social issues have gained immense attention in the past few decades and all the social as well as psychological issues are now properly studies to look for their causes and then move on to the solutions (Theravive, 2012). Serial killing is also including in one of such issues, which has long been debated and discussed, with some of the researchers believing that the serial killers are born while other claiming that they are made. A number of studies have been carried out to look for the possible causes of the issue. These studies have shown that there are variety of reasons and factors behind arousal of situation, and the following paragraphs highlight all of those issues and reasons:

Definition of serial killers

Serial killer could be defined as an individual who has killed more than three individuals on different instances and occasions, instead of killing all the victims at one single point in time. It is eminent to mention here that serial killer are differentiated from mass murderers and spree killers on the basis of their killing pattern, and thus have their own distinct style of operating that makes them fall in the said category (Keppel and Birnes, 2003, Pp: 421). Serial killers are usually known for selecting their victim after much though and consideration, and there is a cooling off period between different murders. The serial killers thus plan the murder carefully and some of them are even known to travel widely in order to find the perfect victim. It is eminent to mention here that not all the serial killers travel, some of them remain confined to the same area and thus operate in the same geographic location and the number murders over a particular period of time also vary from one serial killer to another. It should be taken into account that in most of the case, serial killers continue to kill people until they are taken into custody or they die.

Victims of serial killers

Researches have shown that generally, there is either little or no connection between serial killer and their victims; however, some of the killers follow a particular pattern or victim trait wile selecting their victims. Moreover, it should be noted that in most of the cases, there is no defined or rational motive behind the murders and the serial killers seems to follow an abrupt and sudden pattern.
