Schools Should Not Require Students To Wear Uniforms
Introduction
I feel that students should be able to express their-selves and wear what they want. Nowadays, many students in high school do not want to wear the uniform. Though they may look ugly and not colorful, they're necessary for the high school students. (Brunsma, pp. 72-77) Few education issues have been more hotly debated than the issue of school uniforms and whether requiring students to wear them makes a healthier, safer school climate. Sometimes school teachers, principals, and parents make decisions about school uniforms without getting adequate information first. This can result in inaccurate assessments about how well the program works because the assessments are based on beliefs and feelings rather than scientific research. When school communities fail to do their homework before making school uniform decisions, they may get poor or inflated results.
Discussion
Some reasons that are frequently given by those against school uniforms:
•restrict student freedom of expression•cuts down on attention•spend more on clothing•fewer opportunities for students to appreciate diversity•fewer opportunities to make choices•restricts expression of religious beliefs (yarmulke)
Research has not clearly answered the question whether school uniforms do or do not affect such markers of school climate as school safety, student achievement, reduced violence, or increased student appreciation of diversity. Instead, the results of some of the research have been clouded because of the way in which much of the research has been done. (Randy, pp. 8-8)
Reasons
1. Costs families more money
In addition to their clothes outside of school, students' families will also have to buy an expensive school uniform.
Students will still want fashionable clothes because they do not like to wear their uniform outside of school.
2. Students should be allowed to express themselves.
Uniforms make everyone look the same. Allowing students to wear clothes they like allow them a way to express themselves through style.
Self-expression is important in helping students discover who they are. Allowing students to wear clothes they like will enrich their personality, will should be an important part of education.
3. Uniforms make students want to misbehave.
Many students will often put on make up or pull their skirt higher soon after getting out of school. Forcing students to do something they don't want to do makes them want to rebel and misbehave.
Even students who are in school will rebel against the dress code. This gives teachers more work to do since they have to watch students closely.
4. Uniforms are unfair to female students.
In the winter, female students are required to wear skirts and it is very cold. This can cause them to get sick more easily.
Advertisements make girl students look fashionable and the center of attention, but this isn't how it is in real life.
5. It acts as a block to freedom / creativity
Making students wear a uniform act as a block to their freedom and creativity. Although giving students the options of wearing what they would like to at school, sometimes they overdo it. However, there are others who enjoy and look forward to the thrill of dressing up for ...
