Tesco is among the major grocery shops of the world. It was established in 1924 in East End of the London by John Cohen. The name of the Tesco was initially used for tea which was obtaind from the Cohen's tea supplier, T E Stock well, was joined with the two letters of Cohen and hence named as Tesco Stores Limited, it was integrated in the year 1932. In the year 1935, when the Cohen, the founding member of Tesco, visited the United States of America, he was very much impressed with the super markets in the USA, and the system of the self service due to which people become able to be served faster and also labour cost reduced. In the year 1947, the St.Albans branch of Tesco, which is a tiny shop by 21st century standards (consisting of 200 square meters only), was the first Tesco that is to be rehabilitated into self service. However it did not right away catch the imagination of public. In 1960, the lobbies of the Cohen Parliament to have the retail price Maintenance (RPM) act was put an end to and the efforts were sustained by Edward Health. Tesco in order to get around this offered different other incentives for the customers to acquire them through the doors. These were congregated by (Smith, et,al ,1998,p.35-64) customers where the money spent by them in the store and also because of trading of goods they could get the effective discount. The Parliament passed the Act in 1964 which is known as Resale Price Act, limiting the RPM, which remained in force for the pharmaceutical goods and books in 1979. Until the year 1970, Tesco was operating on the pile it high, and also selling it less expensive formula which was brought in from United States of America by Cohen. Since the market was changing and leaving the serious image and slim margin on the company therefore under the management of the McLaren who accomplished something Jack Cohen in the year 1973. Tesco than decided to try something new and different which creates the drama, in order to become the “inspirational mass retailer”. Currently Tesco is following the well organized strategy and also customers demand is quickly responded and hence Tesco is standing ahead of its competitors.
