There is a huge explosion of learning in the case of a 6 year old child development as the children are known to enter schools when they are in the age bracket of 6-11 years of age. Although most of the children in this age group would be starting their early schooling, there would be other children that would get started with their kindergarten. Their time would be characterized by sharing, caring, crafting and other hands on activities. Such children are known to initiate their journey into books as well as develop phonemic memory skills and learning skills that help them in their decoding of words. The 6 year old children have a knack of developing longer attention spans and thus are able to handle complex tasks of their schooling. The more complicated tasks and projects would be solved easily by children with the efficient utilization of their long attention skills. In this particular age bracket, the children are prone to develop complex thought processes and mechanisms at school and also at home (Shaffer, Lindhiem, Kolko, & Trentacosta, 2013).
Reading and Writing
There would be a huge increase in the level of reading activity at this particular age. The 6 year olds in most cases are likely to develop a knack for independent reading as well as the talent of writing stories. The children are likely to enjoy writing stories and are likely to write stories about their own distinct habits since they enjoy writing stories.
There would be a huge emergence of sight words and thus they would be able to successfully break the different sight words into sounds. The vocabulary in the case of such children would also increase rapidly. This is the age where the actual vocabulary of children develops. With the coming of this age, the children would be able to spell a huge majority of words. The six year olds would also be trained on how to use punctuation and capitalization of letters in sentences (Erickson, Duvall, Fuller, Schrader, MacLean, & Lowe, 2013).
Numbers and Math
The six year olds are more likely to count at a much more increased pace than their kindergarten stage. They are prone to be playing with numbers and getting aware of the different strategies in order to successfully solve the complex problems of addition and subtraction. The six year old children are prone to add up to 10 in their memory, and are also known to enjoy working with complex puzzles.
The six year olds in this particular age would begin to form the different concepts such as “even” and “odd” numbers. In addition, the children at this particular age will begin to identify the different shapes and combine them in order to create new and innovative shapes.
