Research Proposal: Is the GRE a Good Predictor of Graduate School Success

Introduction

Considerable study is part of the ongoing tradition aims to predict the effectiveness and validity of Graduate Record Examination or GRE. Before the year of 1975, most validity information related to criterion obtained from, studies conducted by ETS (Willingham, 1974), and from studies conducted by local institutions; (for example, Lannholm 1960, 1968, 1972; Lannholm & Schrader, 1951) while cooperating with other graduate institutions. A series of studies on cooperative validity conducted by Wilson (1979, 1986) using approximately 130 participants from graduate departments to offer valid information generally predictive along with valid information for students' specific sub-groups. Beginning during 1978-79, GRE - Validity Study Services (VSS) provide free education to contributing educational institution, in spite of different problems emerges because of small size of departments, there is a high correlation exists among admission measures with limited variations observed among the grades of graduates. During 1980, the board of GRE openly supports the establishment of enhanced experimental Bayes statistical methods in the VSS (Braun & Jones, 1985; Schneider & Briel, 1990).

Limitation of the Study

This study in this connection will use a common design to gather data which is comparable from the participants or respondents, and consequently will be able to perform the calculation of vital statistics for every department. Meta-analysis in this study is limited with respect to institutions and department who do not prefer to conduct such studies or publish any relevant data. This is the main reason; the sample may not demonstrate several disciplines or institutions because of unavailability of literature. Shall the statistical tests fail to reveal no substantial difference among institutions and disciplines, graduate faculty and graduate deans might pay minimal attention to outcomes in which their institutions or discipline is not symbolized.

Hypothesis

HO: GRE is a good predictor of Graduate School Success

H1: GRE is not a good predictor of Graduate School Success

Significance of the study

One of the main advantages of this study is to gather a set of questions, which will allow the research to combine the results of the report for subgroup including:

Men and women

Asian American, African American, White students and Hispanic American

Noncitizens and citizens

Master's and PHD students

Test takes who conducted the paper and pencil version of test as well as computer based tests.

Additionally, the overall effectiveness of GRE Subject and General Tests will be determines as a good predictor of graduate school success. The study will not only help in identification of the effectiveness of the GRE as a predictor of school success of graduate, but will also furnish data to examine if the tests are valid equally for everyone, and if the admission process if effective. The common design is the first step which will help in providing answers of different questions involving various small groups.
