Evidence Based Practice

The term Evidence based practice (EBP) was introduced for the very first time by a Mc Master University Canadian medical team. They described it as the process which evaluates the judicious, explicit and conscientious usage of most modern best evidence in decision making in regards to the care of people (Dearholt & Dang, 2012, Pp. 89-90). The whole process goes along a set of stages which are inclusive of

(a) Being motivated enough to implement the evidence based practices

(b) Changing the data requirements in a comprehensive answerable query

(c) Selecting the best evidence with utmost efficiency that answers the questions (it might be from diagnostic labs, clinical exams, literature that is published, etc)

(d) Appraising the evidence critically in order to evaluate its application and validity in practice

(e) Using the outcomes of the appraisal of evidences in practice/policies

(f) Measuring the performances

(g) Training other professionals to follow the same method (Staton, 2006, Pp. 105-110).

In according to (Sackett, 2000, Pp. 45-46), the best highlighting characteristic of the process of EBP is the consideration which is awarded to the expectations and values of the clients as well as their vigorous participation in the processes involved in making the decision. Practice of evidence based social work deals with the clients in the role of participants who are working through practice-related findings of research in regards to the essential decisions and telling the findings of the search with the client.

In case one is unable find any evidence in order to support the service decision, there is a need for informing the clients and for the practitioners, a need for describing their reason for providing a particular recommendation for the clients. Another suggestion by (Newhouse, 2007, Pp. 52-57) says that the EBP problem based approach towards the learning may boost the practitioners ability in aiding their clients by giving them more and more opportunities to use the most recently gathered evidences, improve the knowledge of the practitioners which would automatically improve the performance (that has a tendency to deteriorate in other circumstances) and overcoming a few shortages which may exist in the usual programs of continuing education.
