Relations between the United States and Iran

Introduction

Relations between the United States and Iran began in the mid to late nineteenth century, but had little importance or controversy until the Cold War and exports of oil from the Persian Gulf. Since then, there was established a close alliance between the regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the U.S. government, a period that was followed by a dramatic reversal and hostility between the two countries following the Iranian Revolution of 1979 .

Discussion

The Islamic Revolution of 1978-1979 is in many ways a unique event. It was the first in the history of religious and political revolution that does away with the Shah's regime, and gave the world an example of political leadership of the clergy on the basis of Shariah. The revolution was massive and, according to some experts, the preconditions for the revolution matured about a hundred years. When the Shah, who was the conductor of the U.S. policy in Iran and the region as a whole, was overthrown, the United States has lost its former political influence in Iran (and the entire region of Central Asia). Pro-American policies were deleted from the Iranian government. American oil TNCs have also been expelled from Iran. The Middle East is increasing American naval presence. After 1979, the following trends can be identified in the relationship between the U.S. and Iran. November 4, 1979 g in Tehran was taken hostage by employees of the U.S. Embassy. In response to April 7, 1980 Carter announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Iran. Iran imposed sanctions (a ban on imports of Iranian oil and the freezing of Iranian assets in American banks). There was even an operation to free hostages. January 19, 1981 i signed the Algiers Agreement to release the hostages. U.S. lifted economic sanctions, but retained the ban on arms sales. Economic ties between the two countries gradually began to improve.

This operation involved the mediators (e.g., Israel and Saudi Arabia).
