A chaplain is a minister that has specialization in the setting including Priest, Pastor, Rabbi, Imam, or a lay representative that presents the world view about a secular body. These secular bodies could include university, police department, military unit, prison, hospital, or a private chapel. The term initially pertained to the individuals who work as representatives of the Christian faith; it is now widely used to refer to the individuals who work as representatives of other faiths as well.

Chaplaincy has become a professional discipline in the United States. People, who would like to work as chaplains, are supposed to undergo through formal education leading to a university degree, and therefore, appointed as chaplains. The main duty of a chaplain is to endorse services pertaining to counseling, as well as, spiritual and moral support.
