Description

During my second week of placement at nursery and children centre, I have chosen to work with children who aged between 2-5 years. I felt that this is the age where children started developing, as well as I enjoy communicating with this age group. However, I met children aged between 3 to 5 years because in the children centre usually two groups spend time together. Here, I met Belly who has a warm personality as she asked my name after introduce her.

At one instance, Belly was playing with a toy, but suddenly she started hiding the toy and frequently saying, “Do not see it;” although, I already have seen that toy (Orr, 2011). I informed her that yes I can and begin to explain about the hidden toy. She matched the actual toy with my description and she amused to hear my description.

Feelings/ Thoughts

In case of Belly, I experienced a mixed feeling regarding the learning needs of a child at nursery. I actually find the learning methodologies are quite inappropriate of Belly as she does not meet her developmental needs. On the other hand, I can understand that it is quite difficult for individuals who are working at the nursery to meet the need of each child or to care them individually because of diversity in needs. Since, she is a bright child who quickly learns new things, and her needs of development are not same as other children who find difficulty in learning.

Evaluation

At the nursery and children centre, my experience was quite overwhelming as I enjoyed the company of children, particularly aged between 2-5 years old. However, I felt that inappropriate learning methods for children employed by care givers at the nursery are a matter of concern. Also, this aspect results in raising a negative view regarding children development and learning approaches at the children care. The best part was the role care givers played at the nursery that was of caretaker. However, they do not facilitate the process of learning.

Analysis

Learning methods and approaches are a significant aspect of any care giver's role at the nursery and children care; however, more widespread for teachers working with the children in the nursery and children centre. It is the role of care giver to provide children an opportunity to learn daily activities, as well as I encourage care givers to adapt new learning methodologies to improve children developmental needs. I think that caregivers at the nursery lacks in competencies and skills to deal with developmental needs of a child (Griffin, 2003, pp.207-220).

Conclusion

The strategies can be adopted that will boost the confidence of Belly, along with the strategy that will help a child in perceiving right picture or reality through drills and tutorials.
