Qualitative Research Assignment

PART A

a) Discuss the usefulness of the title, abstract, introduction/ background/ literature review.

In this research, the title clearly specifies the method used (RCT), the population and the intervention, which is good, as recommended by CONSORT. This provides full specifications about the analysis. The title could have included the outcome of the study which is effectiveness of Lidocaine patch which is appropriate to give the influential outcomes related to the data. (Polit and Beck, 2010).

The abstract gathers the proper information of the research study with a brief and concise summary and it is framed well (Bhandari, et. al., 2010). Thus it is helpful to the reader to understand the applicability of research findings or read the study further. The results are well displayed as per the CONSORT guidelines and data values are clearly presented. It provides the overall summary in one paragraph and easy for the reader to evaluate the whole article easily.

b) Discuss the appropriateness of the design used in the study and comment to the way in which it is reported.

The research design used in this RCT which is appropriate. RCT is considered as the ''gold standard'', for providing information about cause-and-effect relationships (LoBindo-Wood and Haber, 2010). It is powerful because randomisation, manipulation and control in the study minimises the bias (Bowling and Ebrahim, 2010). It is good that placebo was used which strengthens the study because each participant get some intervention which will reduce bias. The approach is influential because the certain factors of the method reduce the level of biasness such as, manipulation, randomization and control. In this research the participants are randomly allocated into two groups and which are appropriate, thus it reduces the systemic and selection bias. Clinical trial design reduces the systematic bias, which affluent for the randomization process and ensures the similarity. (Polit and Beck, 2010). The double blinding and intention to treat, avoids bias due to drop out and respondent or interviewer bias respectively. It provides accurate outcomes to analyze and this would decrease the biasness level.

c) To what extent are the population being studied? The setting for the research and the intervention (if present) described in sufficient detail to allow replication of the research and generalisation of the results to similar populations?

The population is appropriate in this study, which has been well defined by using eligibility criteria. Thus, the appropriate findings for each group are easily accessible by the reader. Here, the population is well presented with all demographical and clinical factors (previous canulation, socio-economic history, presence of parents during the canulation), which shows an impact on the generalisation to the population. On the other hand, exclusion criteria neglected important variables such as, those children on any Opioid or analgesic agents, or on any local anaesthetics, these are confounding variables as they reduce the intensity of pain. This criteria would define the approx medicine and its uses on a correct way.

The setting could have mentioned the country and the town because the external ...
